Peter Mocco wins State Championship in wrestling.
The winter sports season officially came to an end following another successful year, highlighted by championships in wrestling and several top student-athletes being selected to compete in the BCAA All-Star Games.
Parkland brothers Michael Mocco and Peter Mocco once again dominated at the state level, each winning a State Championship in their respective weight classes.
Michael, a senior at Cardinal Gibbons High School, captured his fourth consecutive State Championship in the 285-pound weight class. He won all four of his matches at the state tournament to secure the title, capping off a remarkable high school career. Michael finished with five district championships and four regional titles. He is committed to wrestling at the University of Iowa and also previously competed in the U17 World Wrestling Championships.
After finishing as the state runner-up a year ago, Peter rebounded with a dominant performance to claim the State Championship. He won all four of his matches at the tournament and finished the season with an impressive 58–2 record. Peter also captured titles at both the district and regional championships.
The Marjory Stoneman Douglas girls’ wrestling team crowned two Regional Champions, as Zeinab Mourad and Arianna Blanc each captured titles in their respective weight classes. Both wrestlers went a perfect 4-0, winning all four of their matches to secure a title and advance to the State Championship tournament, where Mourad would finish in second place and Blanc placed seventh. These girls previously won District Titles alongside Samantha De Gance and went on to compete at Regionals, joining the entire boys team after they produced five District Champions of their own.
