From Broward County Commissioner Michael Udine
May means summer is right around the corner, and graduation season is upon us. Graduates will be moving into the next stage of life and whether that is college, trade school, military service or joining our local work force, Broward County is here to support you.
Broward County Libraries are available with resources to take that next step. The county supported educational institutes like the Levan Center at NSU, which provide opportunities for innovation and resources for entrepreneurs through our Office of Economic and Small Business Development, and are available to all residents. These resources help young people to learn, receive mentorship, and understand the path to a successful future, whether that is in Broward County or wherever your path takes you. Your community is here to support and invest in a bright future! Congratulations!
This month also means hurricane season is fast approaching. With everything going on, you need to dust off that hurricane plan and be prepared by June. From creating a supply checklist and finding medical shelters to boarding your pets and establishing an evacuation plan, now is the time to act. Visit Broward.org/hurricane for detailed information on how to be prepared and also utilize resources from your city.
Are you ready to see the best pilots in the world perform over the skies of Broward County? The Fort Lauderdale Air Show will be coming to Broward County on May 9-10. The event will include demonstrations from the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, F-22 Raptor Demo Teams, and the Red Bull Helicopter, to name a few. This exciting weekend will provide residents a “birds eye” view of our nation’s finest military and civilian pilots. A ca n’t-miss experience on Fort Lauderdale beach that will thrill the whole family. Visit air.show/fortlauderdale or visitlauderdale.com for more information.
Speaking of making a splash this summer, May marks the start of Broward’s Water Park season! Castaway Island (Hollywood), Paradise Cove (Pembroke Pines), and Splash Adventure (Deerfield Beach) are open every weekend in May, including Memorial Day, and seven days a week all summer long starting June 4. Season passes are available for individuals and families. Get out to these great parks and cool off. Whether you are a kid who is enjoying the big slides or an adult on the lazy river, these parks will make lasting memories for your family.
May also includes Memorial Day where we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the land of the free and the home of the brave. Please take time to reflect on their service and sacrifice. No words will ever be sufficient, but we can express our utmost gratitude and appreciation for these heroes and their loved ones.
Last but certainly not least, I would like to wish our community a very Happy Mother’s Day. I hope the day is full of joy and great memories as we show the mothers in our lives how appreciated they are.
