August is here, and I hope you all have had a wonderful summer so far. Trying to stay cool? Check out some of the great options like splash pads and water parks that the county operates.

Want to take an evening hike or check out the stars? Broward County has many trails and even high-powered telescopes for viewing the heavens. These amazing experiences and more are open to all Broward to enjoy. These are all great affordable options to enjoy. Check it out at Broward.org/parks.

Back to school is in full swing, and so are the savings. Running through August 7, Florida has the sales tax holiday to help with the cost of getting the kids ready to go. From clothing to technology and everything in between, the time is now to get those vital supplies. In addition, while you are making those essential purchases, please pick up a few items for those who can not afford them. Many organizations throughout the community serve families in need throughout the County, and they cannot do it without you.

Did you know Broward County puts science into everyday use to protect our community? This month I will be visiting an air quality testing site to learn how Broward County checks for things that affect many in our community. These sites are essential for determining if the air around us is clean enough to breathe. For example, when a wildfire is burning in the Everglades or Saharan dust is impacting the local area, this is how scientists can understand the impacts and alert residents. For more information about the air quality program, visit Broward.org/air for more information and to check the current air quality index!

As Floridians, we know that August is when hurricane season really kicks into gear. Staying prepared and vigilant is key. Make sure you and your family (including pets) have all the necessary food, supplies, and medications needed if a storm comes our way. If you are a resident at-risk, now is the time to make sure you are registered for Broward County’s Vulnerable Population Registry or Special Needs Shelters. All residents should sign up for Broward’s emergency notification system, AlertBroward, in addition to your city’s community alert system. Visit Broward.org/Hurricane to register and find all the info you need to be Storm Ready.
