Marjory Stoneman Douglas graduate Jesus Luzardo is on the move again after being traded from the Miami Marlins to the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday.
Luzardo, a 2016 graduate from MSD, is headed to Philadelphia along with Paul McIntosh for minor league prospects Starlyn Caba and outfielder Emaarion Boyd. Luzardo is under team control for two more years and is projected to make $6.5 million via arbitration in 2025.
In high school, Luzardo won 23 games with MSD and was selected in the third round of the MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals. In 2019, he was later traded to the Oakland Athletics, making his MLB debut, and then was once again traded in a deal for Starling Marte. This past season, Luzardo went 3-6 and pitched to an era of 5.00 in 12 starts despite missing time with elbow and back issues. He has previously played in the World Baseball Classic with Team Venezuela and had a start in the postseason against the Phillies in 2022.
Luzardo joins a strong rotation with the Philadelphia, featuring former Cy Young Award winner Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola, Ranger Suarez, and Christopher Sanchez. The Phillies won the National League East last year but lost in four games against the New York Mets in the Divisional Series.
