
Westglades Floorball Champions. {MSAA}
Westglades Middle School’s floorball and track and field teams had an impressive end to the 2024 school year.
The boys’ floorball team won the MSAA Champs after going 3-1 in the regular season. In the postseason, the Wolves defeated Sawgrass, Falcon Cove, and New River 14-11 in the team’s inaugural season.
Westglades was led offensively by Bryce Hantman. He scored 33 goals and won the championship as the most valuable player. Viacheslav Kosmachev added 30 goals, while Jackson Gidney led the defense. Every player also scored at least one goal for the Wolves.
The girls also went 3-1 during the regular season but lost in the semifinals to eventual champion Falcon Cove. Francesca Pappas, Jordin Bekker, Alessandra Pennella, and Sonya Starukhina led the offense, while Leah Glauser, Mya Wayed, and Olivia Salcedo shined defensively.
The track and field team ran in the postseason, highlighted by the girls finishing fourth in the Regional Championships. Alexys Caropreso won the 1600 meters, followed by Emiliana Anzures. They both competed in the County Championship, with Caropreso finishing second and Anzures coming in fourth. Ava Austad also ran in Counties after finishing second in Regionals, followed by her fourth-place finish in her last race. She finished fourth in Regionals in the long jump and eighth at the County Championship. At the same time, Jordin Barker was also impressed in both events, which was highlighted by a fourth-place finish in the shot put. In the relay, Martina Velez, Claire Garcia, Avani Smith, and Brianna Rutecki came in fifth in the 4 x 400 and 13th at counties. In contrast, Grace Fitzgerald, Kenley Seliger, Olivia Smasal, and Isabella Pattok finished tenth in the 4 x 100 relay. Marsha Peart also shined, finishing eighth in the discus.
The boy’s team finished ninth in the Regional Championship, with Levi Becker and Xavier DeJean recording points and going on to compete in the County Championship. Becker finished fourth in the 1600 meters and seventh in the 800 meters; De Jean finished sixth in the 400 meters. And ninth in the 100 meters. Marcus Dubreuze placed ninth in the long jump, with Paul Piedra, Colton Pattok, Arjun Tulloch, and Mateo Quin finished ninth in the 4 x 200 relay. Dubreuze, Mateo Quin, Arjun Tulloch, and Sanjay Tulloch finished 11th in the 4 x 400 relay, while Victor Carrasquilo, Aiden Austad, Royce Rutecki, and Jayson Joyner came in 12th in the 4 x 100 meters. Colton Pattok came in 14th in the shot put, with several more Wolves racing individually with Piedra, Pattok, Sanjay, and Arjun.
Westglades also had their girls team finish as the overall MSAA Champions after their success throughout the school year.
