A Message from Mayor Rich Walker
The last month of the year is often the most complex when it comes to the many roles and responsibilities we take on in our daily lives. December is often a rearview mirror that reflects what we feel we have or have not accomplished over the past year.
Add to that the expectations we have of ourselves and others year-round, the expectations others have of us, mixed with the stressors of local and national headlines, and we are looking at one the biggest sources of frustration many of us face throughout the holidays.
I know it goes without saying, but the holiday season is full of hot buttons, with heightened anxieties and unrealistic expectations. In some situations, it seems like people are so angry and easily set off, and it builds as we inch closer to the end of the year.
I think it is helpful for us to put everything into perspective and take a step back. We only have 31 days in December. Are you expecting yourself or others to achieve something unrealistic in the next few weeks? The frenzy of the holidays will always be just that—a frenzy—but if we stop to weigh in on what is realistic—and what really matters—this last month of 2023 could be a much easier lift in terms of stress and we handle difficult situations.
It all begins with setting realistic expectations for yourself and, in some cases, sharing your limits and realistic expectations with others. Once you truly have perspective, what you are able to take on is much clearer. If you can’t take it on, don’t do it.
As we enter the thick of the holiday season, remember to take a deep breath and enjoy your family and friends. When it all comes down to it, they are what really matters.
