Residents eager for updates on the long-awaited Loxahatchee Road Improvements project gathered Tuesday morning at the Parkland Library for the “Coffee with Construction” event hosted by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). The meeting provided critical details about the project’s progress and the anticipated road reopening timeline.
The Loxahatchee Road Improvements project aims to enhance mobility and safety along the busy corridor by adding additional lanes, upgrading infrastructure, and improving traffic flow.
Mayor Rich Walker and FDOT Project Manager Tyler Furrey joined the conversation, sharing insights into the project’s milestones and addressing community concerns about upcoming phases.
Walker expressed optimism about the project’s progress, noting that Loxahatchee Road is slated to fully reopen on December 6, marking a significant step forward.
“FDOT initially projected a year-long closure when the road was shut down in October 2023, and we’re almost exactly on track with that timeline,” Walker said. “The reopening will significantly reduce travel disruptions for residents, even as construction continues in other areas.”
Walker clarified that the current phase of construction will conclude with the reopening, allowing unobstructed travel from Nob Hill Road to the levee. However, he warned residents to anticipate future closures as work moves into the third phase.
This phase, expected to begin in about a year, will extend from Parkside Drive to State Road 441.
“We’ll see additional closures when the third phase begins,” Walker explained. “But for now, minimizing closures after December 6 will make travel much easier for everyone.”
Walker also commended FDOT for their efforts and responsiveness throughout the project. “This has been a massive undertaking, and FDOT has collaborated with the city,” adding, “I want to thank them, along with Commissioner Bob Briar and the rest of our city staff, for their hard work supporting this effort.”
FDOT Project Manager Tyler Furrey emphasized the department’s commitment to transparency and communication with residents.
“We’re aggressively targeting December 6 for the reopening and remain focused on keeping the community informed every step of the way,” Furrey said. “Events like today’s gathering are vital for ensuring residents understand the scope and timeline of the project.”
Furrey also encouraged residents to use FDOT’s resources, including monthly progress reports and project team accessibility. “We’re here to answer questions and address concerns, so don’t hesitate to reach out,” he said.
