May means summer is right around the corner, and the end of school year is near. It also means that hurricane season is approaching. With everything going on you need to dust off that hurricane plan and get prepared. From having a check list of needed supplies, figuring out shelters for those in need of medical care, boarding your pets, or establishing an evacuation plan, now is the time to act. Please utilize resources from your city and Broward.org/hurricane for information on how to be prepared!
Are you ready to see the best pilots in the world perform over the skies of Broward County? The Fort Lauderdale Air Show will be coming to Broward County on May 3rd and 4th. The event will include demonstrations with US Navy Blue Angels, F-22 Raptor Demo Teams, and the SOCOM Para-Commando team. This exciting weekend will provide residents a “birds eye” view of our nation’s finest military and civilian pilots. This showcase on Fort Lauderdale Beach is a can’t miss experience that will thrill the whole family. Visit fortlauderdaleairshow.com or visitlauderdale.com.
Ready to get a jump on the summer? Swim safety is paramount for kids this summer, and what better way to protect children than to teach them to swim? Broward County and its partners established the “Swim Central” program in 1999 and this community program continues to this day. Providing water safety classes to over 180 elementary schools as well as summer camps makes sure that all children have the opportunity to learn. For more information, please visit Broward.org/parks or call 954-357-SWIM.
Speaking of making a splash this summer, May marks the start of Broward’s Water Park season! Castaway Island, Paradise Cove, and Splash Adventure are open every weekend in May, and will be open 7 days a week all summer long starting June 4th. Season passes are available for individuals and families. Get out to these great parks and cool off! Whether you are a kid who is enjoying the big slides, or an adult on the lazy river these parks will make memories for your family!
May also includes Memorial Day where we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the land of the free and the home of the brave. Please take time to reflect on their service and sacrifice. No words will ever be sufficient, but we can express our utmost gratitude and appreciation for these heroes and their loved ones.
Last but certainly not least, I would like to wish our community a very Happy Mother’s Day. I hope the day is full of joy and great memories as we show the mothers in our life how appreciated they are.
