Eight years after the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the nonprofit Make Our Schools Safe continues its mission to turn tragedy into action through advocacy, student leadership, and school safety initiatives.
To support its ongoing work, the organization will host its annual Live for Alyssa Gala: An Evening in Paradise on April 11, 2026, at the Margaritaville Beach Resort in Hollywood.
Make Our Schools Safe was founded in 2018 by Lori and Ilan Alhadeff after their daughter, Alyssa, was killed in the Parkland shooting. What began as a mother’s determination to protect children has grown into a national movement focused on prevention, preparedness, and student empowerment.
Over the past eight years, the organization has advanced Alyssa’s Law in 10 states, legislation that requires panic buttons in schools to help speed law enforcement response during emergencies.
In South Florida alone, nearly $1 million has been reinvested directly into schools to support safety and security projects, including fencing, security huts, Stop the Bleed kits, leadership training, and other preparedness resources.
Nationally, Make Our Schools Safe Clubs and leadership programs continue to empower students to take an active role in promoting safety, kindness, and responsibility within their schools.
The Live for Alyssa Gala is the organization’s signature fundraising event and plays a critical role in sustaining and expanding its work. The evening is expected to bring together approximately 275 community leaders, business partners, advocates, and supporters for a night of remembrance, purpose, and celebration.
Proceeds from the event directly fund school safety initiatives, student leadership development, and prevention-focused programs nationwide.
“This gala is about honoring Alyssa’s legacy through action,” said Lori Alhadeff, founder and CEO of Make Our Schools Safe. “Every year, this event allows us to reflect on how far we’ve come, while also recommitting ourselves to the work still ahead. Together, we are creating safer schools and stronger communities.”
