The Marjory Stoneman Douglas swim teams competed in the Regional Championship at Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center on Thursday.
“Our teams are smaller in depth this year, but entering the postseason, they have put up some impressive swims,” Coach Lauren Rubenstein said. “Not only did our girls win Districts and our boys were runners up to Wellington High School, but they continued that speed into regionals, and our girls’ team was Regional runners up.”
The girls’ team finished second overall, highlighted by Carly Chin, Alexa Anthony, Nikki Harrypersad, and Sophia El Chantiry taking first in the 4×100 free relay. El Chantiry came in second in the 100-yard butterfly to automatically qualify. The girls’ team also had terrific results in multiple events, with Sophia El Chantiry coming in fourth in the 50-yard freestyle and also qualifying in the 100-yard butterfly.
Alexa Anthony finished fourth in the 100-yard backstroke, while the 400-yard freestyle relay team placed fifth with Anthony, Chin, Niki Harrypersad, and Sophia El Chantiry. Roman Kondrashov led the boys, placing in the top ten twice, including a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle to qualify for State. Benjamin Ruytenbeek, Kondrashov, Christian Nichols, and Joseph Villalobos also did well in the 200-yard freestyle.
“We had several fast times on both teams and have a few more athletes waiting to see if those times will bring them to Ocala along with their teammates,” Rubenstein said
Next, MSD will swim at the State Championship on Saturday, November 8.
