The Marjory Stoneman Douglas girls volleyball team managed to qualify for the Big-8 Tournament this season, featuring the top eight teams in Broward County.
The Eagles went on to win a set but ultimately lost in the field round against West Broward High School 27-25, 24-26,12-15. Alyssa James led MSD with eight kills while Isabella Cox had seven, and both Mia Horta and Alexa Cruz had four. St. Thomas Aquinas High School ultimately took first place, defeating Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory in the final.
Horta, Grace, and Grace Pulsifer each recorded an ace, with Horta leading the team with 16 assists. Defensively, Arianna Henrique had three of the seven blocks, while Chloe Siqueira had 21 digs. James and Cox combined for 25. MSD previously started the season 9-1 following wins against West Broward, Cypress Bay, Cooper City, Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory, Northeast, Flanagan, Coral Glades, J.P. Taravella, and Pompano Beach High School.
The Eagles will play two more matches in the regular season, starting with Pembroke Pines Charter on Tuesday, October 7, at 4:30 p.m. The Jaguars are 8-5 this year, while MSD will then play South Plantation High School two days later, as the Paladins are winless through their first 11 matches. The Eagles swept Pembroke Pines Charter last season, but lost to South Plantation High School in five sets.
