Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School’s JROTC cadets held a daylong commemoration ceremony honoring the nearly 3,000 people killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The ceremony was held from 7:40 a.m. to 2:20 p.m. under a pavilion in the school’s main courtyard.

The display featured a banner bearing the names of the victims and a miniature replica of the World Trade Center’s twin towers. The American flag stood to the left of the memorial, while the Florida state flag was displayed on the right.

Two JROTC cadets maintained a solemn guard at the memorial throughout the school day. Fellow cadets relieved the guards every 30 minutes.

Students and teachers visited the courtyard throughout the day to pay their respects.

According to Eagles Battalion Public Affairs Officer Alexandra Londono, the JROTC program conducts the ceremony annually and plans to continue the tradition to ensure the victims of 9/11 are never forgotten.
