The Marjory Stoneman Douglas softball team opened its regular season this week, picking up its first victory in the team’s second game with a win over Cooper City High School.
The Eagles, who previously competed in a preseason tournament and welcomed back former head coach Brian Staubly, managed only three hits in a 6–0 loss to Western High School to begin the regular season on Monday. However, Marjory Stoneman Douglas bounced back with a strong 7–3 victory over Cooper City on Wednesday in their first home game of the season.
“I was happy that they made adjustments and started hitting the ball tonight, Staubly said. “It was a good home win.”
After allowing two runs in the top of the first inning, the Eagles quickly responded. A run scored on a wild pitch before Mya Boleen delivered an RBI single to tie the game. Both teams traded runs early before MSD took control, scoring the final four runs of the game. The Eagles grabbed the lead with a go-ahead RBI double in the third inning and never looked back.
Kaitlin Enright, Rebecca Perez, and Caleigh D’Agati each drove in runs during the rally. Enright also starred in the circle, pitching six strong innings. Micaela Johnston handled the final inning, retiring the last three hitters after hitting the first batter she faced.
Next, the Eagles will host Nova High School on Monday, February 23, at 4 p.m. The Titans enter the matchup 0–1 this season after a 12–8 loss to Charles W. Flanagan High School in their opener, following a six-win campaign last year.
