The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School softball team competed in the South Florida Preseason Challenge, despite not recording a victory, and faced two strong programs.
MSD also welcomed back head coach Brian Staubly, who returns to the program after last coaching the Eagles in 2023. Staubly brings 25 years of coaching experience and 290 career wins, including 190 victories in Parkland.
“The team is young but talented,” Staubly said. “Only two seniors and four juniors, and the rest are sophomores and freshmen. We will be strong on defense. We have a lot of speed on the bases and should be strong in the circle. We just have to hit the ball.”
The Eagles opened the event with a 9-3 loss against West Broward High School. MSD fell behind early after allowing three runs in the first inning, but responded quickly, scoring one run in both the first and second innings to trim the deficit to 3-2.
West Broward, however, broke the game open with a six-run fourth inning. The Eagles answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning but were unable to complete the comeback.
MSD recorded three hits in the contest, with the lone RBI coming from Sophia McComas, who also scored twice. Camryn Ferro and Kaitlyn Enright each added base hits, while McComas and Ferro combined for five stolen bases.
In their second game, the Eagles generated more offense, scoring seven runs against Somerset Academy — all coming in the final two innings. Somerset built a 9-0 lead early, and despite the late rally, MSD dropped its second straight game. Ferro paced the offense with three RBIs, while Rebecca Perez and Myah Boleen each drove in a run during the comeback effort.
“We played everyone in the pre-Season games, trying to finalize a starting nine,” Staubly added. “We started to hit the ball in the later innings of the second game. I love the game and love being back on the field.”
The Eagles finished 12-12 last season and advanced to the Regional round. MSD will open the regular season against Western High School on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 6:30 p.m. The Wildcats went 20-6-1 last season and defeated the Eagles twice, earning 2-0 and 4-2 victories in their previous matchups.
