The Marjory Stoneman Douglas swim team performed exceptionally in their season opener, securing victories against South Broward and West Broward High School on Wednesday.
“We are excited for the upcoming season,” Head Coach David Berke said. “This year’s roster is deep with 48 student-athletes. We have a strong returning lineup and a large group of incoming freshman with a lot of talent.”
The Eagles won 11 of the 20 races, including a pair of relays. The boys team beat South Broward 118-28 and West Broward 104-45, which was led by four wins from Lorenzo Herek. He took first in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle while also winning the 200-yard medley relay with Alexander Nichols, Matias Gold, and Xyen Walker, along with the 200-yard freestyle consisting of Alexander Nichols. Walker and Maxim Georgiev. Nichols won a pair of races in the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard IM, while Nichols, Dylan Shaping, and Roman Kondrahov also won.
The girls won 94.50—74.50 over West Broward and 137-32 over South Broward. Hope Suther, Gina Sands, Carly Chin, and Alexa Anthony won the 100-yard freestyle and the 200-yard freestyle relay. Chin also won the 50-yard freestyle.
Next, MSD will swim against Coral Glades and Cypress Bay High School in their next meet on Wednesday, September 4, at 7 p.m. before the start of a unique season.
“This year’s District has been updated, and we will be competing against several teams in Palm Beach County that we have traditionally not swam,” Berke added. “We are expecting a very competitive and fun season.”
