The Marjory Stoneman Douglas boys’ and girls’ basketball teams have each had their moments this season as both squads head into a brief break for the holidays.
The boys’ team opened the season strong, winning three straight games, but faced a difficult three-week stretch from late November into December, dropping five consecutive contests. Despite the struggles, the Eagles have shown signs of improvement, winning two of their last four games. During that span, they scored a season-high 80 points in a win over Forest Hills and earned a 66–61 victory against Nova High School.
Zach Story leads the team with averages of 12.9 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. Derek Scheidt, Khristian Slack, and Jeremiah Backer each contribute about six points per game. The Eagles will next compete in the Tournament of the Palm Beaches, where they face Grandview Prep on Saturday, December 27, at 12 p.m.
The girls’ team also began the season red-hot, winning their first five games, but has since dropped three straight. The Eagles suffered a one-point loss to American Heritage High School, along with defeats against Mater Academy Charter and Nova High School. Earlier wins came against J.P. Taravella, Charles W. Flanagan, Deerfield Beach, Coral Glades, and Coral Springs High School.
The girls return to action on January 7 at 6 p.m. against Cooper City. The Cowboys are 4–6 this season and lost 59–12 in their lone matchup with the Eagles last year.
