Marjory Stoneman Douglas coach Elliot Bonner was recognized as a “Hero Among Us” during the Florida Panthers’ final game of the season for his service in the United States Marine Corps.
Bonner, who works with both the football and baseball teams, served two years in Vietnam as a Marine, where he was involved in demolition and rockets.
“My biggest contribution was just to survive and protect my fellow Marines,” Bonner said. “When Vietnam ended, I was just glad it was over. When I got back home, I was happy to be with my family.”
Even today, Bonner feels a continued sense of duty and has been working at MSD since 1997.
“I really feel like I am still giving something back to this country as a veteran because the youth of this country needs our help,” he said. “Being an American means everything to me. I am proud to be an American.”
