The Marjory Stoneman Douglas baseball team did not allow a single home run on its way to another District Championship.
The Eagles outscored their opponents 9-0 across two games as Head Coach Todd Fitz-Gerald said his team rose to the occasion and took a step closer to their ultimate goal.
“We finally have guys healthy, and we are starting to get our team back,” Fitz-Gerald said. “Our guys are playing well with the changes we made, and we have players coming off the bench getting big hits. This is a testament to them and the coaches for preparing.”
Drew Boivin got the start in the opening game against J.P. Taravella, pitching two scoreless innings. Reid Dadic followed and recorded the final 15 outs in a 3-0 victory. Offensively, Jake Rizzo set the tone with a first-inning home run. The Eagles added two more runs in the second inning, with Brody Gargiulo scoring on a wild pitch and Cade Raley driving in a run on a groundout.
The Eagles jumped out to another early lead in the Championship Game, scoring three runs in the first inning. That proved to be more than enough for Gio Rojas, who threw a complete-game shutout. He allowed just two hits while striking out seven.
“I was just trusting the fastball and throwing strikes on the inside and outside corners,” Rojas said. “The changeup was on point, and I felt like I had some of those batters in shambles with the off-speed pitch.”
Rojas also helped himself at the plate, driving in the first run of the game. Randy Ruiz added an RBI double, and Dadic contributed with an RBI groundout.
MSD held a 3-0 lead until the sixth inning before adding three more runs, highlighted by a two-run home run from Jackson Taylor. Matthew Toback scored the final run, helping the Eagles improve to 21-5 on the season. The Eagles will now head into the Regional Championship, where they are expected to be the top seed and will host the eighth seed on Friday, April 24.
