The Marjory Stoneman Douglas girls’ golf team competed in the Kings of Springs Vlassic on Wednesday at the County Club of Coral Springs and was led by Andiara Raton.
The freshman finished in second place with a 39, one shot behind the winner. The Eagles also had Sophia Alcala-Marks place third with a 41, while Ella Thompson finished fifth, and Devin Yale came in sixth.
“Been a slow start to the year with rainouts and injuries, but I had a full team last week and my starters put on a show and shot their best team competition score since 2022,” Head Coach Jonathan Smith said.
The boys’ team was scheduled to play, but ultimately did not compete. However, they were selected to compete as a team in the Bitg-8 Tournament, fearing the top teams from Broward County. They will face Coral Springs Charter, Coral Glades, Cardinal Gibbons, Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory, Cooper City, Cypress Bay, Pembroke Pines Charter, and St. Thomas Aquinas High School.
The girls’ team also qualified and will be one of four schools to play alongside Cardinal Gibbons, Cypress Bay, and St. Thomas Aquinas High School, alongside the individual qualifiers from golfers throughout Broward County.
“With a healthy team, we are looking to have a strong showing at the BCAA and District tournaments to get a return trip to regionals and eyeing a state tournament appearance for the second time in three years,” Smith added. “It will be a battle down the stretch, but the girls are focused and have more than enough motivation.”
