Parkland Mayor Rich Walker says the city is preparing for potential budget cuts and service changes after Florida voters approved Amendment 3, which will increase homestead property tax exemption.
In a Facebook statement addressing the amendment’s passage, Walker said Parkland has maintained a fiscally responsible approach to managing its finances, including reducing its fiscal year 2027 budget by $2 million.
“We are confident we have been fiscally responsible throughout my tenure,” Walker said.
According to Walker, the city is scheduling a special strategic planning session to assess the amendment’s financial impact and develop a plan for the coming years.
The amendment will increase the homestead exemption to $150,000 in fiscal year 2028 and $250,000 in fiscal year 2029. However, the exemption amounts for 2030 and beyond remain uncertain.
During the upcoming session, city officials will consider several cost-saving measures, including a hiring freeze, reductions in staff positions and fewer city-sponsored events.
The city will also explore additional sponsorship opportunities for events and municipal facilities to help offset potential revenue losses.
Walker said Gov. Ron DeSantis has indicated that the Florida Legislature will develop a plan addressing homestead exemptions for 2030 and beyond by Jan. 1, 2027.
Once those details are available, Walker said the City Commission and staff will have a clearer understanding of the city’s long-term financial outlook and the adjustments that may be necessary.
“We will keep the community apprised as this process moves forward,” Walker wrote.
