After another incredible regular season for Parkland’s Anthony Rizzo, the powerful left-hander hit a home run in his first playoff game for the New York Yankees Tuesday night.
Rizzo, who tied a career-best with 32 homers in the regular season, hit his first playoff home run this year. It was also his playoff eighth home run of his career and helped New York to a Game 1 victory over the Cleveland Guardians.
With the Yankees leading 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Rizzo hit a two-run home run off starting pitcher Cal Quantrill to put the Yankees ahead 4-1. They would get 2.2 shutout innings in relief to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series.
“The Guardians are a young team that has a lot of momentum and has been pitching really well and playing really well,” Rizzo said postgame. “That’s a scary combination with them coming in after a big Wild Card Series win, so it feels really good to get Game 1.”
Rizzo and the Yankees will have a day off before they resume their series on Thursday at 7:37 p.m. Nestor Cortes will pitch for the Yankees while Cleveland’s ace Shane Bieber makes the start for the Guardians.
