The Riverglades Elementary School Speech and Debate Team showcased their talent and hard work at the MAST #1 tournament.
On September 5, the students competed against several schools at Coral Glades High School. Four Riverglades students earned medals for outstanding performances: Milena Iglesias and Noam Dayan in Duo Interpretation and Blake Johnson and Penelope Walker in Impromptu.
The Riverglades Speech and Debate team comprises 20 fourth and fifth-grade students, led by coaches Ms. Alexandra Bofshever and Mrs. Lindsay Johnson, who also teach at the school.
Johnson tells Parkland Talk that while the odds were stacked against her team, she was impressed by the students’ performances on a tight timeline.
“The students and coaches had a very short time to prepare for the first tournament, but with dedication and determination, the students were successful,”
Johnson shares that students and coaches practice after school every Thursday, focusing on various categories, including Public Forum, Interpretation, Duo Interpretation, Original Oratory, Impromptu, and more.
She says with more time to prepare, the team will be more focused on its next tournament.
“The next elementary tournament will be on November 7,” noted Johnson. “We’re looking forward to seeing our students’ continued growth and success as they build on this strong start.”
