Marjory Stoneman Douglas graduate and the top-ranked prospect in all of baseball, Roman Anthony, made his major league debut on Monday against the Tampa Bay Rays. Then he had his first big league hit on Tuesday.
Anthony was a 2023 graduate from Marjory Stoneman Douglas and was taken in the second round of the draft later that year. After skyrocketing through the Minor Leagues, Anthony made his debut on Monday and finished the game 0-4. He did walk and record his first career RBI in the ninth inning, helping Boston come from behind and tie the game after two runs. The left-handed slugger batted fifth and made his first plate appearance in the second, flying out to left field against hard-throwing Shane Baz.
Anthony then went on to line a ball off the pitcher at 111 miles per hour, but was thrown out at first base. He would also walk and strike out before being pinch-hit for in the bottom of the 11th while the team fell 10-8.
“Unfortunate that we couldn’t get a win, but it was a good experience,” Anthony said postgame. “It’s good to get the first one over with. I felt great. I felt comfortable in the box. Just trying to do a job. Just trying to help the team win.”
Anthony, though, would come through in his first at-bat on Tuesday night against Ryan Pepiot. He doubled home two runs to give the Red Sox an early 2-0 lead. His hit would end up being the game-winner as the Red Sox won 3-1 to even the series at one.
Anthony played two years of High School baseball for coach Todd Fitz-Gerald and won a pair of State and National Championships. He hit 15 home runs during those two seasons and also had 20 doubles and 61 RBIs before being named Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior.
Before his first big league call-up, Anthony was hitting .290 with 10 home runs and 29 RBIs. His final minor league home run was a grand slam that went 497 feet, the longest in baseball this year. He also had 42 career minor league home runs and has driven in 170 RBIs.
The Red Sox are currently 34-36 this year, sitting in fourth place in the American League East. Anthony will be back in action this weekend when Boston hosts the New York Yankees for a series at Fenway Park before heading west to play on the road for the first time with series against the Seattle Mariners, San Francisco Giants, and Los Angeles Angels.
