It took three tries, but the Marjory Stoneman Douglas flag football team finally broke through against Western High School, earning a dramatic overtime victory to advance to the Regional Semifinals.
The Eagles entered the game 12-3 and secured the seventh seed in Regionals. Two of those losses had come against the Wildcats earlier this season, setting up a highly anticipated rematch.
Both teams found the end zone in regulation, with Avery Shah hauling in a touchdown pass from AB Puccio In overtime, Puccio delivered again, connecting with Caitlin Taylor for the go-ahead score. The Eagles converted their extra point—one of two successful PATs in the game—and then sealed the upset with a clutch fourth-down stop on defense.
Next, MSD will play for a spot in the Regional Championship on Monday, May 4, in a rematch of last year’s playoff matchup. Their opponent, the Panthers, enter with a 14-4 record after defeating Coral Gables High School in their Regional Final. Ranked eighth in both the state and nation, the Panthers also captured a District Title earlier this season.
