Vice Mayor Simeon Brier.
From Vice Mayor Simeon Brier:
November is a season of reflection and gratitude, and here in Parkland, the concept of family – all interpretations of it – is at the heart of our community. Whether we are gathered around the Thanksgiving table, cheering from the sidelines, or attending school events, we are parents, grandparents, best friends, colleagues, neighbors, caretakers, and community members. In the City of Parkland, the word “family” has a vast and varied connotation that extends beyond the walls of our homes, extending to the larger community.
Across Parkland, we see examples every day of residents in our community who give their time, energy, and compassion to make a difference. We see it in our schools, where students help classmates, teachers encourage young people to lead, and families support their school communities. The schools in Parkland are an important part of our community fabric, and we see daily how our young people are already finding meaningful ways to serve others.
I truly enjoy seeing the concept of “family” and “community” in action in our neighborhoods, with residents checking on an elderly neighbor, helping someone with a project, bringing up a neighbor’s garbage can, or simply take a moment to ask, “Are you OK?” or “How are you doing?”
We also see it through the many organizations and nonprofits that serve others. Our volunteer organizations throughout our area demonstrate that our community cares for others and service is not about recognition. And we see it in the many community gatherings and programs that bring Parkland residents together at our parks, the Parkland Library, the P-REC, in our schools, and at events throughout the year. These shared spaces provide opportunities not only for recreation, but for connection and community.
This November, I encourage every Parkland resident to take a moment to shine a light on someone who is extending the concept of family and community by going out of their way to help others. Thank a teacher. Recognize a student. Appreciate a neighbor. Support a local organization. Thank a volunteer. Sometimes we need to let others know that their kindness is being noticed.
The City of Parkland is fueled by our family-friendly spirit. But our compassionate sense of community doesn’t just happen. It is generated and shared every day by residents who care about one another and choose to make a difference.
Family and community are about connection, caring, and being there for one another. This fall let’s be grateful not only for what we have, but for the people who make Parkland a community we are proud to call home.
