To some, it may just be a silly contest, but for this proud mom, it was far more meaningful. As a toddler, what my son most looked forward to was seeing the neighborhood adorned with holiday decorations. It didn’t matter which holiday was being celebrated – from Halloween to Christmas, it was his favorite time of year, and still is.
When Madden was 18 months old, we used to walk the neighborhood multiple times a day. As we strolled house by house, he rattled off each one by the name of their halloween decor – the big boo sign, the dancing pumpkins, the skeleton on a bike, etc..
This year, for the first time, MiraLago advertised a Halloween contest among residents. Naturally, my son took the initiative to enter.
Madden designed our winning pirate display using spare parts from old decorations and models he made on his 3D printer. He wanted to incorporate a smoking cannon and found a model online. At 16, now a legal driver, he went to Home Depot to purchase other pieces he needed to make the cannon from scratch.

The Mish family: John, Kim, Jacob and Lexi won for the spookiest house in the neighborhood. Kim, who has lived in MiraLago since it was built, said they decorate this way every year, but when she saw the sign, she thought the contest was a cool idea.
“It’s been my favorite holiday since I was a kid growing up in the Northeast,” said Kim, who stays back and hands out candy while the kids go out trick-or-treating with their friends.
Javi, Sofi, Tito and Gaby Ungo won best overall with their elaborate display of Halloween animatronics.
Halloween may not be the most sentimental holiday, but seeing things come full circle and watching my son bring joy to the children in our neighborhood makes my heart full.
It’s one of those moments that reminds me just how quickly time flies, and I couldn’t be prouder.
