The Marjory Stoneman Douglas wrestling team celebrated ‘Chris Hixon Senior Night’ before winning matches against Suncoast and Palm Beach Gardens.
The event honored the late Chris Hixon, the former athletic director and wrestling coach who was killed during the shooting on February 14, 2018. School Board member Debbi Hixon, the wife of the late Hixon, participated in the ceremony. Members of the Broward Sheriff’s Office, Coral Springs Police Department, and Coral Springs-Parkland Fire Department were also honored.
Girls’ team captain Gaby Caro organized and led the event.
Caro founded the girls’ team at MSD and encouraged girls to participate in wrestling. During practices, she often coaches and encourages girls who are learning the sport.
Her teammates respect her leadership. Mickayla Sugrano was encouraged to join the team by Caro and loves it. “She is amazing. She helps coach the team and asks girls to try wrestling. She really encourages all of us to do our best,” said Sugrano.
Besides Caro, the seniors honored were Mia Velazquez, Grace MacKenzie, Elizabeth Velasco, Naeem Chenery, Evan Ng, and Caleb Hebert.
