Five months after the deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, residents in a Parkland neighborhood received flyers for guns in their mailboxes with the word “Shooting” in bold letters across the top.
The mailers from Bass Pro Shops were sent to residents in the Parkland neighborhood of MiraLago – the same neighborhood where victim and JROTC Cadet Peter Wang lived, along with other students who were in the 1200 building during the massacre.
“I’m sure it was not a targeted mailing to my community, but in light of the tragedy in our city this particular advertisement should’ve been revised or pulled,” said Rachel Frydman, an attorney and resident of MiraLago. “All I could see from the advertisement was the word shooting, second amendment, and then semi automatic weapon. And it certainly seemed ripe for the upcoming primary elections.”
Her son was in room 1213 – the same room where Carmen Schentrup lost her life. “Even though my son could’ve been killed I’m not an anti-gun person, just a proponent of harsher laws and restrictions to make sure guns are used properly and in the hands of person qualified to use them.”
Fred Guttenberg, outspoken father of victim Jamie Guttenberg said that everyone should shop at Dick’s Sporting Goods instead. The retailer ended the sale of high-capacity magazines and sales of guns to people under 21 years old after the February school shooting which left his daughter and 16 others dead. In 2012, after the Newtown massacre, Dick’s Sporting Goods ended the sale of assault-style weapon sales.
“Everyone should shop at Dicks Sporting Goods. Bass has been terrible on this issue and only cares about selling more guns.”
Parkland Talk reached out to several pro-gun residents for their opinion on the mailers, however, they did not want to go on record.
