The Marjory Stoneman Douglas (MSD) High School Eagle Regiment Marching Band received a boost in funding thanks to the Alex Schachter Scholarship Fund.
On Thursday, the nonprofit announced it was matching $25,000 in donations to the band between now and June.
This follows a previous $25,000 donation made last year to support the band and help alleviate the financial burden on students.
The scholarship fund was established in memory of Alex, who played trombone in the MSD band and was killed in the school shooting in 2018.
“For Alex, being in the band enabled him to make lifelong friends, improve his self-esteem, and learn that a positive work ethic would lead to great achievements,” said Max Schachter, Alex’s father.
The Eagle Regiment band, directed by Stephen K. Rivero and his son Robert, are committed to providing life-changing experiences for all students in the program and bringing the band to the national and international performance spotlight.
“This initiative will help propel the MSD band to new success and assist in our ability to perform in the 2022 London New Year’s Day Parade, compete in the Bands of America Grand Nationals and perform in the 2023 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade,” said Stephen. “These kids are extremely talented, and it’s time to let the world know.“
