Broward Education Foundation hosted the Broward Teachers Union’s 29th Annual Innovative Teacher IDEA EXPO on Jan. 31 at Fort Lauderdale High School, bringing together educators from across the district to share creative classroom strategies and resources.
More than 300 attendees explored projects presented by over 35 grant-winning teacher-disseminators, each showcasing innovative approaches to enhance student engagement and improve learning outcomes in Broward County Public Schools.
Participants had access to digital resources for each showcased project, including course outlines, lesson plans, resource lists, student worksheets, and classroom tools that educators can adapt for their own schools.
Included was Diana Haneski, media specialist at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, with her READ WITH SORA: THE POWER OF DIGITAL PAGES presentation.
Sora is a digital reading platform for schools that supports educators and administrators in delivering inclusive, personalized reading experiences.
According to her presentation, students will explore Sora Magazines’ rich digital content and select articles aligned with their personal interests. They will engage in a variety of activities designed to deepen comprehension and communication skills, including verbal reporting, written reflections, creative projects, and surveys on hobbies or interests.
Haneski holds National Board Certification, an M.S. in Library Studies, and a B.A. in Communication. She has presented at conferences and trained colleagues for over two decades, and, with MSD therapy dog River.
The Broward Education Foundation provides monetary grants to teachers such as Haneski who develop innovative curricula and programs that advance student success. Funding for these grants comes through public-private partnerships, support from business and community leaders, and contributions to the Education First Employee Giving Campaign.
In addition, BCPS teachers can apply for Adapter Grants to bring these award-winning programs into their own classrooms. Educators who receive an Adapter Grant are also eligible to earn 10 in-service points.
