Two men are facing multiple felony charges after authorities say they led law enforcement on a high-speed chase following a reported armed robbery at the BJ’s fuel station.
According to a Broward County Sheriff’s Office booking report, James Edward Morris II, 38, of Coconut Creek, and Michael Russo, 32, of Boca Raton, were arrested on February 10, following an incident that began near BJ’s Wholesale Club, located at 5901 West Hillsboro Boulevard in Parkland.
An arrest affidavit states that deputies responded to the area in reference to an armed robbery that had just occurred near the BJ’s fuel station. While en route, law enforcement received a description of the suspects, later identified as Morris and Russo, and their vehicle, which they discovered traveling north on U.S. 441.
Authorities say an officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the men failed to stop and instead fled at a high rate of speed. The chase reportedly continued east on Hillsboro Boulevard, then south on Lyons Road, where the fleeing vehicle made a U-turn near the Sawgrass Expressway before heading back north and eventually turning onto Sol Press Boulevard
The affidavit indicates the vehicle finally stopped approximately two blocks east of Lyons Road, where officers conducted a felony traffic stop. Morris was taken into custody without incident, along with Russo, who was the passenger.
During an inventory search of the vehicle prior to impound, deputies reported finding Gatorade bottle caps containing a dried powdery substance in the center console. The substance later tested positive for amphetamines.
Morris and Russo were transported to the Broward County Main Jail for booking. Both men are held without bond, pending their first court hearing.
