South Florida’s Carbonell Awards are seeking applications from college-bound high school students for the 2026 Jack Zink Memorial Student Scholarships, with the application deadline extended to Feb. 28.
Gary Schweikhart, board president of the Carbonell Awards, announced Tuesday that eligible students in Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties are encouraged to apply for scholarships recognizing students pursuing theater and journalism studies.
Since 1978, the nonprofit organization, known as South Florida’s premier theater and arts honors program, has awarded more than $140,000 in scholarships to graduating students demonstrating talent, experience, and a commitment to the performing arts and arts journalism.
One student from each of the three counties will receive a combined scholarship valued at $3,000, consisting of a $2,000 Jack Zink Memorial Scholarship and a $1,000 Hap Erstein Memorial Scholarship.
The scholarship selection process is chaired by Javier Siut, Vice President of Carbonell, and the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs. Committee members also include Carbonell board members Terry Colli, Bill Nix and Schweikhart, former board member Jody Leshinsky, longtime Carbonell judge Nancy Cohen, and Elaine Oksner, widow of theater critic Hap Erstein, for whom the memorial scholarship is named.
Students planning to pursue theater or journalism studies at the college level are encouraged to submit their applications by Feb. 28.
