The Marjory Stoneman Douglas girls soccer team advanced to the Regional Final following their 2-0 win over Miami Palmetto Senior High School on Friday.
The Eagles are now 16-1-1 and received goals from Layla Segelnick and Breanna Gordon to move on to the Championship Game. Emma McGregor and Jackie Destefano picked up assists. They also continued their streak of not allowing a goal in their last seven games.
MSD now has won four playoff games, including their fifth straight District Championship, and will be making their first appearance in the Regional Final since 2021 when they beat Vero Beach in penalty picks.
“Another tough, well-coached Miami-Dade team that pushed us hard for 80 minutes, and I was very proud of how we competed and did enough to get the win,” said Head Coach Laura Rountree.
MSD is set to play Cypress Bay High School in the Final on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 6 p.m. The Lightning are 17-2 this year and won a District Championship, beating Western High School and Doral Academy in Regionals. Cypress Bay won 6-0 in last year’s Regional Semifinal before falling in the State Final and have beaten MSD. in the postseason the last two years
“We have a great respect for Cypress Bay, who is a very talented and well-coached team,” Rountree added. “We are excited to be advancing and getting the opportunity to play them.”
