Marjory Stoneman Douglas girls soccer team won their fifth straight District Championship on Thursday following their win over J.P. Taravella High School.
“Anytime you win a district championship, it is very special,” said Head Coach Laura Rountree. “Every year is a new team with new players. A special thing about this district win is that we are so young and did it without any seniors.”
The Eagles started the District Tournament with a bye in the opening round. They went on to beat Coral Glades 2-0 on Tuesday.
Grace Dykstra scored both goals for the Eagles. Morgan Goldman and Breanna Gordon recorded assists on the first one, while Layla Segelnick set up the second one for Dyksta’s 12th of the season in what Coach Rountree said was a hard-fought game and felt her team brought a ton of energy.
The Eagles then beat the Trojans 2-0 in the final. Emma McGregor and Segelnick recorded goals, while Ella Stevens went 160 minutes without allowing a goal in the tournament. Also, Rountree said freshman Emily Rodriguez won her first District Championship 27 years after her mother, Dina, won one in 1996.
The Eagles are now 14-1-1 and are set to host a Regional Playoff Game on Tuesday, Feb. 7 against South Dade High School. The Buccaneers went 13-5-1 this year, but lost in the District Championship Game against Coral Reef High School.
