State Rep. Christine Hunschofsky (D-Parkland) launched her re-election campaign with a robust show of support at a fundraising reception held at Deja Blue Restaurant on May 7.
The fundraiser featured prominent local officials, including Broward County Property Appraiser Marty Kier, who introduced Hunschofsky. Also in attendance were Parkland Mayor Rich Walker, Coral Springs Mayor Scott Brook, Coconut Creek Mayor Sandy Welch, Coral Springs Vice Mayor Shawn Cerra, Commissioners Joy Carter and Nancy Metayer Bowen, and Parkland Commissioner Bob Mayersohn. Hunschofsky’s sons John and Michael volunteered at the event, checking in guests.
Hunschofsky expressed her gratitude to those in attendance. “I am truly humbled and honored for the support from the community. It is always nice to have such wonderful encouragement and support from long-time friends and community members,” she said.
Her district, which includes Parkland, Coconut Creek, Margate, and parts of Coral Springs, raised $6,000 in the first quarter, records show. No challengers have filed to run against her.
First elected to the Florida House in 2020, Hunschofsky has been tapped as the Leader Designate-Elect for the 2027-28 legislative terms by the Florida House Democratic Caucus.
Originally from Boston, Hunschofsky is an alumna of the Boston Latin School and Boston University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and philosophy. She later obtained her MBA from Babson College. Over two decades ago, she relocated to Parkland with her husband, Hannes. Her political career commenced on city committees, leading to a victory for the District Two Commission seat in 2013.
In 2016, following Michael Udine’s resignation to pursue a county commission seat, Hunschofsky ran for Parkland mayor, securing the position with 76% of the vote.
Her tenure as mayor was marked by the tragic school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where 17 students and staff were killed.
Following this, Hunschofsky played a pivotal role in comforting affected families, attending funerals, and advocating for the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act.
Reflecting on the challenges and responsibilities of her office, she noted, “I could never have imagined when I entered public office that I would see our community brutalized by a mass shooting and confronted by the devastating effects of an international health emergency.”
Hunschofsky serves as the Democratic Whip in the state House and holds prominent positions on the Infrastructure Strategies Committee and the Insurance & Banking Committee.
“I am incredibly grateful to serve this community and look forward to the opportunity to continue the work.”
Her Community Meet & Greet Campaign event is Monday, June 3, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Hurricane Grill & Wings, 6240 Coral Ridge Drive, Coral Springs.
