Marjory Stoneman Douglas Track and Field Opens Season with Strong Showing at VELLA Showcase

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas track and field team kicked off its season at the VELLA Ice Breaker Relay and Field Preseason Showcase, highlighted by multiple event victories and strong performances across the board.

On the girls’ side, the quartet of Sophia Zengotita, Olympia Koumoutsakis, Sparta Koumoutsakis, and Noa Nierman captured first place in the 4×1600-meter relay. Alexis Freckleton, Gianna Sachs, Isabella Bayarrin, and Emiliana Anzures also earned a win, taking first in the sprint medley relay.

The Eagles added a runner-up finish in the distance medley relay from Antonella Dominguez, Addison Hokanson, Alexys Caropreso, and Emily Levine.

Individually, Freckleton placed second in the long jump. Victoria Mallerman finished third in the 400-meter hurdles, while Freckleton and Devorah Rodriguez both turned in strong performances in the shot put and discus. Eva Wen placed third in the discus, finishing four spots ahead of Jalli Wheeler.

On the boys’ side, Jonathan Rodriguez secured the team’s lone victory with a first-place finish in the long jump. He also added a third-place finish in the triple jump. Austin Khayyami placed third in the long jump and fourth in the triple jump, while Sergio Lozano finished third in the 400-meter hurdles.

The Eagles also competed in seven relay events on the boys’ side, with two teams earning second-place finishes, rounding out a successful opening meet for Marjory Stoneman Douglas.
