Two former Marjory Stoneman Douglas baseball standouts are making waves this summer, earning All-Star honors in their respective leagues.
Christian Rodriguez, a four-time state champion, has been lights-out on the mound for the Harwich Mariners in the Cape Cod League, earning not only an All-Star Selection but an All-State Selection. Â The Florida Gators right-hander has tossed 12.1 scoreless innings, striking out 13 batters while allowing just six hits.
Rodriguez’s success story began at MSD, where he posted a remarkable 29-2 record with a 1.19 ERA and five saves. He struck out 310 batters in 168.2 innings, establishing himself as one of the top high school arms in the country before signing with the Gators.
After missing his freshman season due to Tommy John surgery, Rodriguez bounced back to become a key piece of Florida’s bullpen. He made 22 appearances this past season, picking up a win and helping the Gators reach the NCAA Tournament once again.
Niko Benestad also made headlines this summer, starring for the Delray Lightning. The powerful right-handed hitter earned a spot in the All-Star Game and competed in the Home Run Derby. He wrapped up the summer hitting .405, with five home runs, five doubles, and a triple.
Benestad, currently in the NCAA transfer portal after beginning his college career at the University of South Florida, was a key contributor at MSD. He batted .343 with nine home runs and 70 RBIs during his high school career, in which he won four State Championships.
