MSD Boys Wrestling Wins District Championship; 4 Advance to State Championship 1

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas wrestling team captured its fourth straight District Championship on February 17, while another one made the State Championship for the girls after a strong run in Regionals.

David Leiva also won his fourth straight individual championship, while Rocco Duygulu and James Messier each recorded their third victory, with Keegan Lake winning his first title. MSD also had strong results from Bryce Siddens, Jacob Balk, Joshua Lopez, Lucas Siqueira, and Jackson Zajkowski, all of whom came in second. At the same time, Arav Shintre, Santiago Caro, Aaron Porudominsky, and Dante Reynolds placed third.

At Regionals a week later, they had Leiva, Duygulu, and Jajkpwski qualify for state as the team finished 5th overall out of 30 teams. Leiva, who had previously lost in the Regional Semifinals the last three years, knocked off the defending State Champion before a tight win in the Final.

Duygulu came in third, losing in the quarterfinals but returning to win four straight matches. Zajkowski lost his first match and had to knock off a two-time BCAA Champion. Later, he avenged the opponent that beat him earlier by securing a pin to advance and finish fourth. Siddens, Balk, and Lake secured multiple wins, with Messmer and Siqueira winning once.

The girls team came in third place, while Ariana Blanc came in first individually. She went on to come in third place at Regionals and booked her spot at the State Championship next month. Aniyah Smith and Emily Balk each placed second, while Kaylee Barthel, Mickayla Sugrano, and Addison McMahon finished third. MSD also had Haasini Vattikuti come in fourth and Olivia Yakich place fifth.

At the junior varsity level, Timmothy Carrol won first place for the Eagles, while Logan Strauss, Ian Liston, and Zach Glaser all placed second to help MSD place seventh.

Next, MSD will compete at the State Championship on March 6-8 at Silver Spurs Arena.
