Marjory Stoneman Douglas held three senior nights and also had their wrestling team compete in the State Duals for the first time in school history on Friday.
The boys basketball team honored Brady Kuebler, Ayden McClean, Jason Ortiz, Noam Refaeli, and Justin Jaimes before winning against Monarch High School 67-43 on Monday. The seniors combined for 48 points, with McLean leading the way with 24. Kuelbler added 15, while Ortix had seven, and Refaeli scored twice.
The Eagles finished the regular season with a record of 9-12 and will get set for Districts. They were beaten by Deerfield Beach High School in the opening round in overtime last year and will be seeded third in the District Tournament. MSD will play Spanish River Community High School on Monday, February 3. The Sharks are 8-12 this year, with the winner playing Park Vista Community High School. Coral Glades is the top seed and will face either Santaluces or Boca Raton Community High School.
The girls basketball team recognized Riley Mcleary and Naomi Grissette, beating Monarch High School 63-4 on Monday. The Eagles improved to 11-8 and finished the season with wins in five of their last six games, heading into the District Tournament as they also lost to Deerfield Beach High School in the playoffs last year.
The Eagles got the fourth seed and will play Spanish River Community High School in their opening game, with the winner playing top-seeded Park Vista Community High School. The Sharks went 4-14 this year, while Coral Glades will be facing Boca Raton Community High School, with the winner playing Santaluces High School in the Semifinals.
On Friday, the wrestling team competed at the State Duals for the first time in school history. The Eagles previously won the District and Regional Duals before they competed at State for the first time before losing in the Quarterfinals. The Eagles went 4-0 in the Storm Front State Duals, beating Sarasota Military Academy, Cypress Creek, Cocoa Beach, and Key West High School in the final.
They also held Senior Night on January 22 against Suncoast High School, honoring Reid Kalvaitis, Lucas Siqueira, Jimmy Messier, Rocco Duygulu, David Leiva, Jackson Zajkowski, Jeremy Lopez, Evan Mazzilli, Brogan Whitworth, Enhao Li, Veleria Bonilla and Liz Azevedo. MSD will get set to wrestle in the BCAA Championship on Feb. 7-8.
