Marjory Stoneman Douglas continues its excellent run, highlighted by a pair of lacrosse teams in the postseason.
The girls’ team is set to play for a District Championship following a 19-8 win over Western High School in the Semifinals. The Eagles went 8-6 during the regular season to secure the second seed and a first-round bye in the postseason.
Kaitlyn Irwin went on to have a historic game as the Wildcats, scoring nine goals and adding an assist. Chloe Resnik added four goals and five assists, while Patricia Phang and Aubrey Kasen each scored twice. Amanda Bilsky and Michaela Kraemer scored, while Kasen and Caroline Lamb had assists.
The Eagles will play top-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas High School in the final on Tuesday, April 15, at 4 p.m. The Raiders went 11-5 during the regular season and beat Miami Palmetto Senior High School 20-0 in their first playoff game. These teams met earlier this year, with St. Thomas Aquinas winning 15-7.
The boys’ team had only two wins in 12 games during the regular season but upset Western High School 8-6 in the opening round of the District Tournament. They were seeded fifth and advanced to play top-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas High School, but they lost 22-0 to finish the season 3-11.
The Eagles were led offensively by Zaid Popen, the junior who led the team in goals and assists. Josh Johnson, Michael Cacace, Noah Ozan, Landon Beecroft, Max Fliegel, Nate Klein, Julian Victoria, and Jackson Gibney also scored goals.
MSD will have eight seniors graduating from this year’s team: Michael Cacace, Landon Levine, Julian Victoria, Konrad Verlsteffen, Jake Pleffner, Mikey Fierstat, Ryan Mockenhaup, and Ethan Hand.
