
Marjory Stoneman Douglas Wrestling Team. {MSD Wrestling}
With school on break, Marjory Stoneman Douglas had both its wrestling and boys basketball teams in action.
The wrestling team placed third at the Bobby Stanley Duals at Cardinal Gibbons High School. Competing as a mixed boys and girls team, the Eagles finished 8–2 overall with wins over Fletcher, Coral Springs Charter, Boca Raton, Cooper City, Monarch, Dr. Krop, Spanish River, and Southwest Miami High School.
The Eagles’ only losses came against host Cardinal Gibbons and Wakulla High School in the semifinals. Santiago Cato led the team with 45 points, while Jose Tuso and Luis Cardozo each added 42. Timothy Carol and Jakob Balk rounded out the top five scorers.
Keegan Lake, Olivia Yakich, Zach Glaser, Zeinab Mourad, Gabriel Abad Lucesi, and Jake Whittmore all recorded multiple match victories during the tournament. The wrestling team will return to action at the District Duals on January 7 at Coral Springs High School.
Parkland native Michael Mocco also stood out, winning 10 matches while competing for Cardinal Gibbons. A University of Iowa commit, Mocco is a four-time District Champion, a three-time consecutive Regional and State Champion, and a U17 World Championship participant.
Meanwhile, the boys basketball team went 1–2 at the Wellington High School tournament, finishing with a 62-48 victory over Park Vista Community High School behind 18 points from Zack Short. Khristian Slack added 10 while the Eagles previously fell 59–47 to Grandview High School and also dropped a game against Palm Beach Lakes High School 62-52.
MSD now sits at 6–9 on the season and will return to action against Cooper City High School on Wednesday, January 7, at 7:30 p.m. The Cowboys enter the matchup with an 8–4 record and defeated the Eagles 87–80 in their lone meeting last season.
