Parkland teenager Benjamin Gurewich won a bronze medal in his World Cup debut at the Cadet Men’s Sabre World Cup in Bogotá, Colombia.
He is listed as Gurevich in the International Fencing Federation results.
Gurewich, 16, and a junior at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, went 5-0 in the pool round, scoring 25 touches and allowing 11. His plus-14 indicator placed him third after pools and earned him a spot in the round of 16.
He defeated Brazil’s Henry Douglas 15-11 in the round of 16, then beat Colombia’s Federico Solorzano Penagos 15-12 in the quarterfinals. Gurewich’s run ended with a 15-12 semifinal loss to Colombia’s Salomon Anzola Contreras, who finished second.
Benjamin is the son of Angelika and Gary Gurewich and lives in Meadow Run. He currently ranks 11th in the world among cadets.
“Getting my first World Cup medal is a good way to start my international season,” Gurewich said. “I’m grateful to my family and my coaches for everything they’ve done to help me get here.”
