The Broward County School Board approved the sale of a vacant Parkland property to Broward Health on Tuesday, moving ahead with a $14 million deal for land once planned as the site of a new elementary school.
The 10-acre property, commonly known as the Trails End site, is located near Trails End and University Drive. School district agenda records listed the buyer as Broward Health and set the sale price at $14 million, minus closing costs.
Broward County Public Schools purchased the land in 2006 for about $5.9 million. The city of Parkland contributed $850,000 toward the acquisition because the property was expected to be used for a school. No school was built there, and the site remained undeveloped.
The school board also directed district officials and attorneys to review the issue, meet with Parkland officials, and bring back an item addressing whether the city should be repaid the $850,000. The matter could return to the board at a future meeting.
The sale comes as Broward County Public Schools faces declining enrollment and a major budget shortfall. The district has already closed several underenrolled schools this year as part of a broader effort to reduce expenses.
Broward Health owns neighboring land near the Trails End property. District discussions around the sale have referenced possible educational opportunities for students and support for Eagles’ Haven, a Parkland nonprofit created after the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting.
Broward Health has not publicly announced its final plans for the site.
