Three Marjory Stoneman Douglas seniors were named winners of National Merit Scholarships financed by U.S. colleges and universities.
Officials at each sponsor college and university selected their winners from the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program finalists who plan to attend their institution.
The recipients are Anna Bayuk, National Merit Emory University Scholarship; Maxwell H. Kilman, National Merit University of Florida Scholarship, and Amanda A. Manausa, National Merit University of Florida Scholarship.
The college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship. An additional group of scholars will be announced in July, bringing the total number of college-sponsored National Merit Scholarship recipients in the 2020 competition to about 4,100.
BCPS Superintendent Robert W. Runcie said they were extremely proud of the students and their tremendous accomplishments, which were achieved while facing great challenges this school year.
“I believe our students will be part of the greatest generation this country has ever seen. They will be the generation that has the courage to seek truth and justice in our country and take on the most pressing challenges,” he said.
This is the third announcement of National Merit Scholars in 2020 by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Recipients of corporate-sponsored awards were named on April 22 and winners of the $2,500 scholarships on May 13.
