Nine-year-old Tanvi Karthik, a fourth-grade student at Somerset Parkland Academy, has won this month’s creative writing contest.
According to Somerset Academy English Language Arts and Writing teacher Ashley Gobeo, the contest is a monthly affair organized by the school’s Creative Writing Club to recognize outstanding writing in the classroom. A new theme is introduced each month, and a winner is chosen from poems submitted.
Gobeo, who tells Parkland Talk she has been teaching at Somerset Parkland Academy for two years, says she is most excited about the club’s efforts and its impact on students each month, particularly as they hone their writing skills at a young age.
“I’m thrilled to see the enthusiasm and creativity that the students bring to the club,” Gobeo shares, adding, “It’s a joy to witness their growth and passion for expressing themselves through writing. “
Gobeo says the club meets every Thursday after school until 4:30 p.m., offering students like Karthik a creative outlet to showcase their talents.
This month, students in the Creative Writing Club were tasked with writing a poem centered around the theme “A moment of beauty that you have witnessed. ”
Tanvi’s winning poem is a heartfelt ode dedicated to her twin sister:
Double the trouble
here come the twins
When life gives me trouble
My twin is my win
Always there for me
It fills me with glee
My twin is my life
And it feels so right
By time to time
By her by my side
Even when the world ends
In the end, we’ll always be more than friends
I LOVE YOU TANYAA
