Baseball season has not even started, but Marjory Stoneman Douglas has another student-athlete set to play in college.
Senior Alex Lazar is set to attend Coker University in South Carolina. He becomes the sixth one from the varsity baseball team to announce their commitment and joins Christian Rodriguez, Jacob Gomberg, Cayden Freels, Jacob Herzberg, and Dillon Moquin.
“It feels great to commit,” said Lazar. “I can finally concentrate on my season going forward, knowing where I am going to play in college. I’m so happy to continue playing the sport I love.”
Through many years of hard work and dedication I would like to proudly announce my commitment to Coker University. I would like to thank my family, friends, and coaches for believing in me and helping me out throughout the process. Ride Cobras💙💛 pic.twitter.com/JiE70sHPIC

Lazar began baseball at seven. He has played for the Parkland Pokers, HOF Fitz, and X-Team Baseball.
After spending two years on the junior varsity team, Lazar was a member of the 2022 State Championship team for MSD.
When starting shortstop Devin Fitz-Gerald suffered an injury, Lazar took over and played incredible defense. He has a fielding percentage close to .950 and stole six bases last year.
“Alex is so valuable defensively,” said Head Coach Todd Fitz-Gerald. “We don’t win last year without him. He made some unbelievable plays. I’m looking for big things from him this year. If he can hit like he plays defense, we will be extremely good, and I couldn’t be happier for him.”
Lazar quickly established a strong relationship with the coaching staff and said academics played an important role in his decision. He still has one more season left with MSD before playing for Coker University, which finished 2022 with 13 wins.
He plans to keep working hard, get stronger, and play with former teammate Jack Goldberg in college.
