When the holidays are long gone, but the Christmas tree isn’t, it’s time to chip in and donate it to Broward County’s annual Chip-a-Tree initiative.
Last year Broward County Parks recycled nearly 4,000 trees, which probably would otherwise have gone to landfills.
The free program requires Broward County residents to remove all decorations from their holiday trees — no decorated trees will be accepted, then bringing the trees to a participating park.
The trees are then chipped and used for landscaping throughout the county park system.
Broward County’s recently appointed Vice Mayor, Michael Udine, encourage everyone to use this service.
“You can dispose of your tree in a safe, eco-friendly way knowing that even this small act is helping our park system and the environment,” said Udine, who added, “In a year when we all tried to give and help others, this is a nice way to continue.”
This season’s program runs daily through Monday, January 18, 2021, giving residents plenty of time before hauling their tree to a park.
Regular weekend and holiday gate entrance fee are not in effect for recyclers, so there’s no excuse not to do the right thing. There is a limit of two trees per vehicle, artificial trees are not accepted, and no commercial vehicles or garbage trucks are allowed.
