After playing only two games in the past 20 months, another season is right around the corner for Marjory Stoneman Douglas football.
The Eagles won both games before positive COVID-19 tests cut the season short, now arrive with a relatively new squad after 23 seniors graduated.
“We are a young football team and trying to get better every week,” said Head Coach Quentin Short. “We are going to have to grow up quick.”
After Matt O’Dowd graduated and went to play at LSU, sophomore Ryan Spallina will be the new quarterback with Mathew Wilson, a transfer from St. John Paul, likely to get a bulk of the carries at running back.
Hervin Louis and Christian Spencer return as quality wide receivers with newcomer Lamari Penaloza coming in. Aris Skarecki will play center with John Paul and Alex Brotton at tight end.
Defensively, the Eagles have some big-time players in Luke Evans and Calvin Fowler at cornerback with Chris Cepeda and Traejon Roberts at safety and Gabriel Lenamon at linebacker.
MSD will have its home opener on Friday, August 27, at 7 p.m against Cooper City High School. Then they head on the road before returning home to play Deerfield Beach and Coconut Creek.
The Eagles will play four more games and then have Senior Night on October 29 against arch-rival Coral Springs High School and then finish the season off with a matchup with Coral Glades.
