Marjory Stoneman Douglas continued their success into the playoffs with the tennis, lacrosse, and flag football teams.
Coming off a District Championship, the girls tennis team shined in Regionals, winning another title. They beat West Broward and Cypress Bay without losing a match to qualify for the State Championship.
The boys won District but fell 4-1 against West Broward High School, with Dennis Oliveira winning the only match. He already qualified for States and will also play doubles with Danny Platovsky after this success in the District.
On Thursday, the girls lacrosse team advanced to the Regional Semifinals following a 20-4 win over Boca Raton High School.
“Another fantastic team effort tonight to get the victory and advance in Regionals,” Head Coach Scott Iardella said. “I’m tremendously honored to lead this group of young ladies and watch them grow together as a team.”
The teams met in the District Final after the Bobcats eliminated the Eagles for the last three years from the postseason. The Eagles won 16-6 before their win in the first round of Regionals.
“Our goalie, Addy Sacks, possibly had the best game of her career tonight,” Iardella added. “Her saves were simply amazing. We’re so excited for the next step. Like we have done all season, we take it one game at a time.”
MSD improved to 13-3 on the season and will play Jupiter High School in the Regional Semifinals on Tuesday, April 30 at 7 p.m. The Warriors went 10-9 during the regular season and defeated fourth-seeded Palmetto High School after losing 16-14 in the District Final.
The boys lacrosse team had a rematch against St. Thomas Aquinas High School in their first Regional Game. The Eagles lost and ended the season with a record of 7-7 despite Darren Edenbaum finishing 18th in the nation with 52 goals.
The flag football team completed a historic season, reaching the Regional Semifinals. The Eagles won their first District Championship in school history, winning their regional opening game before being shut out 6-0 against Wellington High School on Tuesday.
“This season was simply amazing,” Head Coach Chris Baldwin said. The part I will remember the most is becoming District Champions. They played at a level no one expected other than the coaches. I am extremely proud of each and every one of them. The future is bright.”
MSD finished the season with a record of 13-2, led by quarterback Samantha Calavetta. She threw for nearly 2,000 yards and 27 touchdown passes, while Alina Caravello added seven. Kenslee Ward led the team with 11 touchdown receptions, while Savannah Tenore added eight.
Courtney Heymach led the team in rushing with 237 yards and five touchdowns while also catching six passes for scores. Mickayla Sugrano, Alina Carovello, Daria Boykin, Kayley Partlan, and Alessia Frenquellucci combined for nine touchdown passes while the Eagles outscored their opponents 299-54 this year.
Defensively, Morgan Goldman led the team in tackles, followed by Caravello and Surgrano. Alessia Haltiwanger and Ward combined for 24 sacks, while Tenore led the team with 12 interceptions. The Eagles will have Elizabeth Velasco-Campbell, Jennifer Baksh, Goldman Daveigh Rampersad, and Ella Kalvaitis all graduate this year but will return a talented team for the 2024-25 season.
