The country’s most dominating high school baseball team continued to shine, with the varsity team winning Districts while former graduates had historic moments.
The baseball team beat Monarch High School 8-0 in the opening game on Tuesday to advance to the final. Jayden Dubanewicz pitched five scoreless innings and struck out seven. James Smith tossed the final two innings, while Rylan Lujo led the offense with three RBIs. Nick Diaz drove in two, with Niko Benestad, Bennett Gary, and Erick Torres all driving in one for the team’s 20th win of the season.
After falling behind 2-0 in the final, the Eagles came from behind to beat Boca Raton High School 5-2. Gavin Gargiulo earned the win, throwing a complete game and striking out 11. Offensively, Torres knocked in three runs, including a two-run single in the fifth. Gio Rojas and Drew Freeman also drove in runs to advance MSD to Regionals.
Former Marjory Stoneman Douglas first basemen Anthony Rizzo achieved another milestone, hitting his 300th career home run on Sunday.
Rizzo, a 2007 graduate from MSD, played 11 seasons in the big leagues before being traded to the New York Yankees in 2021. The 32-year-old hit 242 home runs with the Chicago Cubs after recording his first as a member of the San Diego Padres. He went on to hit his 300th homer during a 15-5 victory, hitting it off of Janson Junk.
“It’s awesome,” Rizzo said postgame. “It’s really incredible. Time flies. I try to enjoy every moment. I try to play with a smile on my face. Definitely, when you hit milestones like this, it feels great, and you just look back at my parents and everyone a part of my career, and my wife for the last eight years. It’s been amazing.”
Rizzo has five already this season and is one of 160 players in history to reach 300 in his career. He went on to win Player of the Week.
It’s been a wild journey for the two-time State Champion from Marjory Stoneman Douglas at the University of Florida, but Jake Clemente recorded a milestone on April 27.
After missing all of his freshman year with an injury and light work throughout the start of this season, Clemente recorded his first win in the SEC over the second-ranked team in the country.
After the potential top pick in the 2024 MLB draft made the start in Jac Caglianone, Clemente came in to pitch in the fifth and did not allow an earned run in two innings. He also struck out two before handing the ball off to the back end of the bullpen.
Clemente is now 2-0 this year and also had a win against Jacksonville University on April 17. He has thrown 8.2 innings this year, allowed five earned runs, and has struck out 14. With the postseason approaching, Clemente has established himself as a midweek starter while also contributing on weekends out of the bullpen. Also, 2022 graduate Cam Harris was named Breakthrough Athlete of the Year for Wingate University and Coby Mayo hit his 11th home run of the season for the Norfolk Tide.
